My Top 10 Hamilton Songs
Hey everyone!
So first of all, I know it's been a month since I posted (OMG WHAT?!) so this one is gonna be good (I hope...). Okay so let's set the scene: I am at my rehearsals for Elf Jr. and we have an hour break. I go with some other people to the train station and we meet another
group there, too. As we're walking down the stairs and onto the platform, everyone breaks out into song
and starts rapping and singing. Me and my friend Alice are clueless as to what's happening. We asked, "What are you guys singing?". They all screamed "Hamilton" and continued singing (even when we were on the train). Me and Alice were embarrassed by this, as you would be, but the next night we decided to listen to the entire soundtrack. And OMG THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING MUSICAL! I am obsessed already and am currently trying to learn the words so I can relate to the group. Anyways, this is a list of the Top 10 songs (in my opinion) that you should listen to. Give it a try, go on!
10. Aaron Burr, Sir
This is the second song of the play and I chose it because it has really clever word play. The melody is good but not as good as some of the others. It starts off as quite a chill song but then goes to a slow, hip-hop beat in which the other leaders rap about themselves.
9. The Room Where It Happens
This song is about the private dinner that happened between Hamilton, Jefferson and Madison which makes Burr very jealous. According to Miranda, the lyricist, he says this is the best song he's ever written. The song is average paced and is pretty catchy.
8. Guns and Ships
This is a really fast paced rap song, and I love a good fast paced rap song. Apparently there's an average of 6 words a second in the song which is LOADS. It's about the command given to cut off the British navy at Yorktown.
7. The Reynolds Pamphlet
This song is about Hamilton publishing a public admission about his affair with Maria Reynolds. It also has a bit of "Satisfied" which is why it's higher up. Also, the beat is very electronic and it kind of works, not going to lie.
6. Schuyler Defeated
This song has the same melody as 'The Schuyler Sisters' but it still possesses it's own style. It also features Burr and Hamilton. Like the title says, it's about Philip Schuyler, Hamilton's father-in-law, being defeated after Burr switches political parties.
5. Alexander Hamilton
This is the first song and it provides a great backstory for Hamilton. It explains Hamilton's early life as an orphan in the Caribbean. This song is used as a leitmotif throughout the rest of the play as many other songs use this melody.
4. The Schuyler Sisters
This song is SO GOOD, but it had to be 4 because the other are literally 1% better. This song sees the Schuyler (Sky-ler) Sisters wandering the streets of New York and they are excited by the revolution spirit. This melody is also used commonly throughout the play. My favourite part of this song is "and Peggy!" because it just sounds so out of place and forced!
3. Wait For It
This songgggggg. This has such a good rhythm which is unlike the others and has a really powerful meaning, even if you take the context out. My favourite part of this is "death doesn't discriminate, between the sinners and the saints, and it takes and it takes and it takes" because it's so inspiring and it's just indescribable (you have to listen to it to understand).
2. Helpless
Okay, this song was so close to number 1, but I decided to keep it as number 2 because it's repeated in the other song. This song is about Eliza falling in love with Hamilton and it's just a sweet song about love. I know, it's soppy but just listen to it and it also has a great beat.
1. Satisfied
Okay. This. Song. Is. Great. It's about Angelica and her love story with Hamilton that never happened. It's kind of tragic but Renee Elise Goldsberry KILLS the vocals both singing and rapping. The melody changes halfway through and becomes such a power ballad. It's amazing and you should definitely listen to this, if you're only going to listen to one.
So, that is my list of the top 10 songs in Hamilton. Trust me, it's great for everyone because it's not in the classic 'musical' genre. I really hope I get tickets to see it in London next year because HONESTLY thats a dream. I still need to find someone to go with though (LOL). Anyways, see you next time!
Bye!
